Perhaps more important is where it is not legal. It is NOT legal in the major resorts of Las Vegas, Reno or Lake Tahoe. State law prohibits prostitution in counties with a population over 400,000 and Clark County (Las Vegas) is the only county that has reached that mark officially. While Washoe County's (Reno & No. Lake Tahoe areas) population exceeds 400,000 today, when the 2000 census was conducted it was under 400,000 so officially the population still is under 400,000 (that will change after the 2010 census). Even though it isn't illegal by statue in Washoe County the county has enacted its own laws prohibiting prostitution there. It is also banned by muncipal or county laws in Carson City, Douglas County (So. Lake Tahoe area) and Lincoln County.
Of the 12 remaining rural counties, prositution is legal but only 8 of them have active brothels at this time. They being Elko, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Storey and White Pine.
The closest legal brothels to Las Vegas will be found in southern Nye county near Pahrump about 60 miles west of the city. Reno's closest brothels are about 10 miles east of town in Storey County. Lake Tahoe's nearest legal brothels are found in the small town of Mound House in Lyon County about 30 miles east of the lake just east of Carson City.
