oestrogen and progesterone
The hormone in males is the testosterone. In females it is estrogen
They are Oestrogen, Progesterone, LH-leutinising hormone and FSH-follicle stimulating hormone. A fifth hormone that also is important is Prolactin.
The female hormone is called Oestrogen (ees-tro-jan) and Progesterone (pro-jest-a-rone) These are true names and the main cause of periods. There are more sex hormones, most can be found in your saliva but... Oestrogen and Progesterone are the main two for women.
The ovaries secrete progesterone and Oestrogen, the testes secrete testosterone and oestrogen. These are known as androgenic hormones.
luteinizing hormone
Progesterone looks to be more important for menstruation. You need fairly large dose of oestrogen in absence of the progesterone to maintain the menstrual cycle.
The interstitial cell-stimulating hormone stimulates ovulation in the female and production of the female sex hormone progesterone. In the male, it stimulates the secretion of testosterone.
Adrenaline, thyroxine, insulin, oxytocin, pituitrin, testosterone, luteinising hormone, ADH (anti diuretic hormone) oestrogen, progesterone, growth hormone. And many more besides.
I don't know much about it but from what we've learn in biology - it may be because the woman produces too much oestrogen (a hormone) herself. The egg needs to mature, but if too much oestrogen is produced, it will stop another hormone (FSH) from working. FSH makes the follicle (which contains the egg) mature. I suppose it could be the woman had suffered some problems (like she was hit) with her lady parts.
Take your pick: Estrogen, progesterone, oxytocin, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG)
