The two are not neccessarily related. One describes a political ideology and the other relates to differences based on geographical regions. Very early in colonial development the colonies were divided into New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies. The regions had different life styles, economic interests, and cultural interests, but after the Revolution the idea of nationalism was embraced by the entire country, or at least enough of each state to ratify the Constitution.
Both Missouri Compromises, the one in 1820 and the following one in 1850, recognized that sectionalism that already existed. The acts of compromises were made to place these sectional issues on the "back burner" so to speak, so that the Federal government could function properly in other areas not associated with slavery. The recognition that sectionalism was not going to disappear, however, should have been a wake up call.
Nationalism came about in Asia when the formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885 took place, and shortly after the Philippines gained independence from the Spanish, making them a U.S. colony. Russia encouraged Slave nationalism while Austria worried that this nationalism could undermine their empire. Russia supported Serbia which was very bitter at the annexation of Bosnia and saw themselves as Serbia's protector.Austria, Hungary, was a multi ethnic state which means that it was made up from people of many different nationalities. This caused problems when Nationalism took place because all of the different groups of nationalities wanted to have their independence, they wanted national statehood. This caused turmoil and instability within the Empire.
Here are some opinions from WikAnswers contributors on the place of nationalism in the modern world. That's a very personal question. It's a matter of opinion, and there's no conclusive answer. But if you want to know my opinion, nationalism will never die out. It will adapt new forms and strategies, but it will never disappear.Personally, I'm not against being proud of your nation or country, but feeling you have the right to crush the others because you feel superior is another story.I believe nationalism does have a place in the modern world. It is essentially pride in one's nation; not everyone should be pressed in nationalistic ideals but without nationalism, the military would suffer in size with fewer people willing to die for their nation.
