I know of one way but it wasn't always guaranteed. They could go on the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman is the founder of this. It was not a real "underground" railroad. It was a covered carriage and the slaves would hide under all the crops and things under the cover in the back. Some of them made it out and some could get caught. But that is one way they could get out of slavery.

How did the southerners justify slavery?

Many things were used to justify slavery. One of the arguments was that without slavery the people who were slaves would be living in worse conditions. Another was that The Bible gave them permission to have slaves and that slavery had been accepted worldwide for thousands of years. Another excuse was that by making people slaves Christian souls were saved and that Northern factory workers were not as well off as slaves. That slavery was a positive good and that the slave owner could protect and guide the slaves. Finally, that the slaves were needed to do the work.

How did Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas differ in their views on slavery?

Abraham Lincoln said that slavery could exist in the United States if it did not spread. That means that the states that had slaves could keep them, but any new state added to the union could not have slavery. Stephan A Douglas believed that slavery was wrong and that it should be abolished from all states now and in the future. Bottom Line: Lincoln= current slave holding states have slaves. All new states have no slaves. Douglas= no slaves what so ever.

Why did some white people not want to help the slaves?

Some white people did not want to help the slaves because they were afraid of being persecuted, they agreed with slavery or they were disinterested by the idea of slavery and therefore felt no need to help slaves.
