How did Amelia Earhart become famous and when did she become famous?

Amelia Earhart was a famous aviator. She achieved notoriety for being a member of a three man crew on a transaltlantic flight in 1928, although she was not the pilot, and genuine fame for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, which she did in 1932. After a number of long-distance flights she attempted an around the world flight in 1937, in the course of which she, her airplane, and her navigator Fred Noonan completely disappeared.

Earhart was a publicity seeker, and used her notoriety to endorse commercial projects, her favourite causes (including women's rights), herself and her career. Because she was so heavily hyped, she tends to overshadow other female aviation pioneers such as Harriet Quimby (the first woman to fly the English Channel, in 1912).
