In an effort to spur recovery, the admistration of Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal and other government social programs that sought to improve confidence and restore jobs in the economy. It involved the federal government in many areas of banking and industry regulation. Included were the massive public works programs of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and the rural electric construction of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). It also featured the debut of the Social Security system.

However, it took a larger economic stimulus, which was World War II, to finally end the Depression. It also included unprecendented spending by the federal government for the war effort. Although dependent on women for the first time as a significant workforce, the war boom got the US out of its economic crisis and established the basis for the modern form of US society.

The major accomplishment of the New Deal was to ease the economic hardships felt by most during the Great Depression. This preserved confidence in the American institutions and averted any attempts to radically change our basic economic and political structure. The relief measures of the New Deal did put people to work. But the New Deal failed in its attempt to achieve a complete economic recovery. The recession of 1937 was proof that the New Dealers had not unlocked the secrets of maintaining economic prosperity during peacetime. Only when the nation began to prepare for World War II, along with massive purchases of American goods from abroad (and American rearmament), did the Great Depression come to an end. By 1939 the economy was on an upswing and by 1940, after war had begun in Europe, the Great Depression was history.

In reference to the US, the Great Depression of the 1930's came to an end when WW 2 began in 1939. Then the nations in conflict had a demand for American farm products and manufactured goods. This demand was a large factor in easing the US out of the Depression. By 1941, the US itself had demands for the same types of products mentioned earlier. Thus, the war can be said to gave lifted the US out of the depression.
