Barty Crouch died because he had figured out that the "Mad-Eye" Moody that was there was really his son, Barty Crouch Jr. So barty jr. decided to kill his father so nobody else would know he was there and ruin his plan to get Harry to the graveyard for Voldemort.

Barty Sr was placed under the Imperious Curse by his son, but the effects started wearing off and he wandered into the grounds of Hogwarts where he bumped into Harry Potter. He was extremely confused and spent considerable time talking to a tree, who he thought was Percy Weasley, but he did manage to ask Harry to speak to Dumbledore. When Harry went to get Dumbledore, Crouch Jr killed him, transfigured his body into a bone and buried him.
