Oppression and personalismo. The Cuban people have been denied a say in how to run their country. There is no freedom of speech, if you speak against Castro and /or his government you end up in prison on some made up pretext.

But General Fulgencio Batista, with the support of the armed forces, took control of the country. Castro with 123 men and women attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. He was arrested was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He was released after two years. Castro left for Mexico where he began to plan another attempt to overthrow the Cuban government.
After building up a stock of guns and ammunition, Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida, and eighty other rebels arrived in Cuba in 1956. This group became known as the July 26 Movement and they made their base in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. As the history shows he did not used the military but instead he used revolutionaries.

When JFK began the embargo of Cuba he was dealing with a situation of the USSR placing missiles on Cuba. This is 90 miles from the American coast, so his purpose was to stop the Russian ships from coming and going out of Cuba. Literally American Navy ships surrounded Cuba until the missiles were removed. The relationship with Castro didn't improve so the embargo stayed in place. In the post war WW2 philosophy of containing communist aggression Cuba was included in the list of communist countries. Has been communist for 60 years ever since Castro overthrew the government.
Why was the US afraid of a communist government in Cuba?
Cuba caused problems in the US since Castro was brought to power in 1959, in the revolution. Castro forced all US businesses and investments to leave Cuba. In retaliation, the USA refused to buy cubas main export; sugar. This was in the middle of the cold war, so the Soviet Union saw a way to gain influence in the carribean. The Soviet Union quickly offered to buy Cuban sugar and also provide machinery, oil and technological assistance to Cuba. Cuba agreed. Castro was now linked with the Soviet Union and he professed that his political views were towards communism. As a result of the Soviet involvment in Cuba, the USA broke off relations with Cuba in January 1961. Shortly after this, Cuba declared itself communist. This worried the USA, because communism was now closer to home then ever. This all then lead to the Bay of Pigs invasion and Cuban Missile Crisis.
