Elizabeth the daughter of Peter the Great brought Catherine to Russia from a minor principality in Germany. She also brought Fredrick of Prussia from Germany to marry Catherine. They were both in their teens when they arrived in Russia. Catherine took to becoming Russian from the start. She learned Russian, converted from the German Luthern church to Russian orthodox and changed her German name to Catherine. Fredrick on the other hand was more interested in wearing military uniforms and playing with toy soldiers. This would continue all of his life and when he became Czar he had whole armies to play with. The marriage between Catherine and Fredrick was not an intimate one and they were married 7 years before they spent the night together. By this time she was pregnant with a child from a lover, and had to make sure the child was accepted as part of the royal blood. She will have several lovers and more children in her life. At one point one of her lovers was a commander of the palace guard. They plotted to kill Fredrick and historical evidence points that assassination took place arranged by the lover. This is when Catherine became Czarina and took the title Catherine the Great.

Peter the Great died in 1725. To secure the revolution placing the Romanovs in power he had decreed that each tsar should name his successor, but himself had named no one. He had already out his son Alexis to death tp prevent social disorder. Thus, Peter was succeeded by his wife. She was a person of peasant origins. She reigned two years as Catherine l. This was followed by the young boy Peter ll, son of Alexis and grandson of Peter l. He reigned from 1727 to 1730. He was followed by Anna, reigning from 1730 to 1740.

Anna attempted to reverse the revolution of Peter the Great. The following summarizes the royal line to the thrown:

* Tsarina Anna was followed by Ivan l;

* His reign was only a few months;

* Ivan's mother actually ran Russia, a German woman who followed the trend set by the German group in Russia;

* She tried to keep Peter l's modernization program going;

* Aristocrats resented this and brought about a palace revolution in 1741;

* Peter the Great's daughter Elizabeth took the throne and held power for 21 years, then she died;

* Elizabeth was unsuited for being a tsarina, she even believed the England could be reached by land;

* Despite this, she entered into a war against Prussia, England being her ally;

* A number of strange events concerning Russia then happened;

* Her nephew, Peter lll, basically "retarded" was dethroned;

* His wife Catherine ll took the throne and was Catherine the Great. She was German; and

* Catherine the Great is credited with many critics as being an "enlightened ruler. She ruled from 1762 to 1796.
