The Territory of Christmas Island is a small, non self-governing Territory of Australia located in the Indian ocean, 2,360 km northwest of Perth in Western Australia and 500 km south of Jakarta, Indonesia. It was named by Captain William Mynors of the East India Ship Company vessel, the Royal Mary, when he arrived on Christmas Day, 25 December 1643.

∙ 10y agoOn Christmas Day of 1643, Captain William Mynors of the British East India Company arrived on the ship Royal Mary and gave the island its name. However, he was not able to actually land on the island because of the ruggedness of the coastline, much of which is lined with rocky ledges and steep cliffs. The first recorded landing did not take place until 1688.

That island was discovered on Christmas eve of 1777 by Captain Cook, and is now known as Kiritimati.
