George III was infuriated by the "Boston Tea Party. He ordered the British navy to close Boston Harbor's port. He then ordered additional British troops to occupy the city. There were additional taxes or acts placed on the colonists. The Townsend Act placed taxes on lead, paint, paper, glass, and tea. The Quartering Act forced colonists to house British troops in their homes. These acts infuriated the colonists who now wanted independence from Great Britain, and desired to establish a new government that did not involve any type of monarchy.
