It depends on the time period you are talking about. If it was during the age of exploration,(where people such as Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Vasco di Gama, etc., explored the world.) Then they competed for power through finding a route to Asia, trading silk and spices, etc.
Armed troops and guns; the same way that has been practiced for around 7000+ years, As Joshua robbed the Canaanites of their lands, way back then! The More Things Change; The More They Stay The Same!
In 1492, Spain sent Columbus across the Atlantic, and his landing in America launched an age of exploration, exchange, conflict, and conquest. As Europeans came to this "New World," the lives of Native Americans would be profoundly changed.
France, Spain, and Great Britain were the major players in colonizing North America and fighting each other for power. Another notable player was the Netherlands, though they were quickly booted out.
They did it through their armies. Nations would send soldiers to the place they wanted to control and probably enslave the Native Americans there and then claim the land. If they wanted to control an area already populated by Europeans they would send soldiers and fight the settlers until the settlers lost or they lost.
France and Great Britain were the main competitors for land in North America. Great Britain basically kicked the French out of North America after the Seven Years' War. France lost Canada to Great Britain, but gave its colony of Louisiana to its ally, Spain. It was reduced to its tiny colony of Haiti in the Caribbean. Eventually, Spain gave Louisiana back to France, as France wanted to use this land for its sugarcane-slavery business in Haiti. But once slavery was abolished, France had no need for this territory. Then when the US approached France, offering to buy New Orleans, France offered the entire territory of Louisiana. Once the US purchased Louisiana, its ideology of Manifest Destiny took sprout and it eventually became hungry for land. By this time, France was not a top competitor, the British had Canada, Russia had Alaska, and Spain eventually lost its empire. The US invaded Canada and started The War of 1812, which was a war without a victor. Next, The US invaded Mexico over land. The US won and acquired 1/3 of then Mexican land. There was still the Oregon County that the British, Russians, Spanish, and Americans claimed. The Russians and Spanish eventually backed out, but the British wouldn't leave. The US and UK reached a deal, avoiding war, establishing the 49th parallel boundary; anything south went to the US and anything north went to the UK. Years later, the US then purchased Alaska from Russia and annexed Hawaii. Manifest Destiny was accomplished.

It was valuable to them because the European countries claimed North America as their own in the early 1500s, and discovered North and Central America on accident while looking for a sea route to Indonesia.
