Hershey's Kisses were introduced in 1907. A common myth is that the name comes from the "kissing" action by the machines used to make the candy. However, it is more likely an appropriation of a common industry term for a dab of chocolate. Actually the way Hershey's Kisses got its name was because of the the machine that squirted out the chocolate. When it squeezed out the chocolate it made a sort of kissing sound...like a "smooch."

The story is that Hershey Kisses got their name from the depositer than pumps out the small dollops of chocolate onto a cool metal plate. As the chocolate meets the plate and is formed into the familiar rounded-pyramid shape, the depositer makes a sucking noise similar to that of a kiss, hence the Hershey "Kiss".

It's called a Hershey Kiss because the machine makes a "smooching" or "kissing" sound when an individual Hershey Kiss is made.
