In the years 1933-39 Hitler saw the Catholic Church as a threat to his Nazi state:
-Catholics owed their first allegiance not to Hitler but to the Pope. They had divided loyalties.
-There were Catholic schools and youth organisations whose message to the young was at odds with that of the Nazi Party.
-The Catholics consistently supported the Centre Party.Hitler intended to remove this party.
At first, however, Hitler decided to co-operate with the Catholic Church. In July 1933 he signed a concordat or agreement with the Pope. The Pope agreed that the Catholic Church would stay out of politics if Hitler agreed not to interfere with the Church. Within a few months Hitler had broken this agreement.
There were some Protestants who admired Hitler. They where called 'German Christians'. Their leader was Ludwig Muller who became the Reich bishop, which means national leader, in September 1933. However many Protestants opposed Nazism, which they believed conflicted greatly greatly with their own Christian beliefs. They were led by Pastor Martin Niemoller, a First World War submarine commander. In December 1933 they set up the Pastors' Emergency League for those who opposed Hitler. In the following year they set up their own Confessional Church. Niemoller was arrested in 1937 and sent to a concentration camp. The Confessional Church was banned.
the programme of the nazi party said they believed in 'positive Christianity.' it spoke of 'freedom for all religious denominations.' yet within months of seizing power, the Nazis were doing theire best to damage the christian faith.
The catholic chruch at first allied itslef with Hitler, with the pope and Hitler mutually assuring each others validity in a Concordat. in return for Hitler's protection, the pope ordered bishops to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler. however, Hitler soon broke this agreement and openly began to persecute catholic institutions. priests were soon being put into concentration camps.
protestants fared no better. At first they agreed to become apart of a 'Reich church,' but soon enough after interference many became sick of this arrangement and rebelled. 6000 out of 8000 church leaders left the 'riech church.' The Nazis saw this as a clear challenge and arrested all those involved and sent those to concentration camps.
most other religious sects where brutalised also. for example, over a third of all Jehovah's Witnesses were killed in concentration camps in this period.
