During the 1930s and then during World War II (from 1939-1945), Hitler and his Nazi associates tried to take over the world through a variety of means. Initially, they utilized Propaganda, diplomacy, and the threat of military force in order to expand their power. Later (from 1939 onward), they added military force as a more direct method to their attempt to dominate Europe and also the entire global community.

He worked his way up through the military.

Well, Hitler did fight as a decorated soldier for Germany in the First World War (he even won an Iron Cross), but that's not exactly how it went.

Long story short? He was a very passionate public speaker, and people listened to him. Of course, he had help from people like Joseph Goebbels (Hitler's propaganda minister), but it was his determination and passion to rid the world of "unclean" blood that helped him gain power in Germany.

Hitler came to power quite legitimately via the electoral process. His Nazi party emerged as the strongest party in the German elections of November 1932, with 33.1% of the popular vote (a fall of 4.2% since the last vote in July 1932). The Social Democrats came second with 20.4% and the Communists third with 16.9%. The two anti-democratic parties, Nazis and communists, held exactly 50% of the vote but between them a majority of seats, 296 out of 584.

German newspapers at this stage actually began predicting the demise of Hitler and the Nazis and Goebbels recorded the result in his diary as a "Schlappe", a hiding.

As no viable government could be formed, the previous Chancellor, Franz von Papen, went to the German President Paul von Hindenburg and requested the dissolution of the Reichstag and the delay of new elections and to consider the possibility of a Dictatorship until the economic recovery of Germany stabilised. He was opposed in his request by General Kurt von Schleicher who spoke on behalf of the army, and claimed that such a step may lead to a German civil war. Von Schleicher set his hopes on building a coalition with the moderate wing of the Nazi party around Gregor Strasser and in turn splitting the party. He also believed that he could bring the unions on board and build a government of consensus across the whole political spectrum with a parliamentary majority.

Hindenburg accepted von Schleicher's proposals and appointed him Chancellor but his attempts to build a government failed because the unions dithered and Hitler moved against Strasser. At the same time, von Papen, who had been Chancellor prior to von Schleicher's appointment, entered into negotiations with Hitler, naively thinking that he could control him if he offered him the Chancellorship (with himself as Vice Chancellor) in a coalition of moderate parties.

Hindenburg, who despised Hitler, was talked into agreeing to the Hitler-von Papen coalition government and on 30 January 1933 appointed Hitler as Chancellor. The next elections in Germany took place on 5 March 1933 under the conditions of the emerging Nazi dictatorship
