Islam came at a time when people started to worship things other than God and started to let go of the former religions.
A great angel called "Gabriel" came to "Muhammad" who was a 40 years old trader in the area now called Saudi Arabia. The message of ethics, morals and guidelines for life was communicated by "Gabriel" to "Muhammad" through the Qur'an (Islam's holy book) from "Gabriel" to Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Muhammad was a well mannered man who was loved by his community and known as "the honest and trustworthy" way before he received the message.

By forming Islamic armies, conquering non-Islamic countries, and making them into Islamic countries. Simple.

Islam did not in fact first develop on the Italian peninsula. It first arose in its distinctive form in the 7th century CE (or, AD) within the Arabian Peninsula in what is now known as Saudi Arabia.
