It was, before unification by Garibaldi, a number of separate states. Both Austria & France had control of parts of the Italian peninsula at one time or another.

It was Camillo Cavour. Prime minister of Sardinia who worked towards a united and independent Italy. Mazzinni and Garibaldi also worked together on this goal with him.
