Louis Armstrong was the first man to bring Jazz outside of New Orleans to the entire country. Not only North America but the whole world as well. His unique and skilled techniques showed a different characteristic on a trumpet and cornet. He was the first soloist as a matter of fact. He could improvise while a tune is playing and start a swing feel as he was playing. This led to many doors for musicians everywhere and is still happening even now. Many musicians started their own improvisation and it was always different. The feel and the sound could be recognized by who was playing since everyone would know their style. We take this for granted now, but back then they didn't solo on stage or play out of the tune. Louis changed all that.
Louis even started scat singing. He was said to have used his trumpet like a voice and his voice as if it were an instrument. Scat singing was a great way to entertain and play music when a musician needed to rest his chops. So a musician could keep performing like resting without having to take breaks in between.
He was the top performer even when they had no TV or internet. Everyone knew his name and he is important to the world of jazz, or to the modern future of music. Dizzy Gillespie once said "if it wasn't for him there wouldn't be any of us". And that's a fact!
Initially in New Orleans, then on the river boats plying the Mississippi, then in Chicago, then in New York and other US cities when touring. Finally, his band played in virtually every major city in the world.
Louis Armstrong was the best jazz historyen every only Charlie Parker came close to being as importent as Louis to jazz.
