A:The Bible never says that Mark ever met Jesus. However, because Mark's Gospel was attributed to Mark in the second century, and because it is known to have been the first New Testament Gospel written, many have sought to establish how the Mark could possibly have known so much about the mission of Jesus.

One view is that the Apostle Paul taught him about Jesus. A view that became current in the second century is that Mark wrote down everything that Peter told him about Jesus. Yet another is that Mark was the young man whom the women found in the sepulchre on the third day of the crucifixion. Even if true, none of these is evidence that Mark met Jesus.

Another answer from our community:

There is no solid evidence for this. It is contended that the man at Gethsemane, when Jesus was arrested who fled naked was Mark. However, whether he actually met Jesus is unknown, since this is not recorded in any written records.

A:Mark, the companion of Paul, never met Jesus. Nor was he the author of the gospel that now bears his name.

All the New Testament gospels were originally anonymous, until the second-century Church Fathers attributed them to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, so we do not even know who wrote the Gospel of Mark. However we can be sure that the author never knew Jesus personally. Some scholars, noting that the author seems to have known Paul's epistles, think that he used themes, sayings and persons from the epistles to write a new gospel of Jesus.

The Bible doesn't say that he did meet Him directly. Some believe he wrote from his experiences with both Peter and Paul. In any event, he was inspired to write what many say is the first Gospel.

Matthew 4: 18 - 22

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." They immediately left [their] nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James [the] [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

AnswerEven the most conservative theologians acknowledge that Mark never met Jesus in person, so could not have learnt about Jesus first hand. However, he knew the apostle Paul, who would have taught him the Christian gospel.

Papias, bishop of Hieropolis in Asia Minor (ca.130), named Mark as the author of the (previously anonymous) gospel and the 'interpreter' of Peter, presumably as if Mark had written from Peter's memory and notes as his secretary (Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, 3.39). However, there is no real reason to rely on Papias' asumptions, and biblical scholars do not believe that the author of Mark's gospel was really John Mark. Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) assumes that the author of Mark seems to depend on traditions (and perhaps already shaped sources) received in Greek, in other words not from a close friend such as Paul.

Since John Mark was probably not the author of the gospel that was eventually given his name, we do not really know how much he learnt about Jesus, but what he did learn was probably from Paul.

John 1:40-42New King James Version (NKJV)

40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone).

Whether Mark actually met Jesus is less important than was once thought, because New Testament scholars no longer accept that Mark was the author of the gospel that now bears his name.

Where does it say in Mark's Gospel that Jesus carried his cross?

A:Mark's Gospel does not actually mention Jesus carrying his cross, although it is assumed he did at first, until Simon of Cyrene, who was passing by, was ordered to carry the cross for Jesus (Mark 15:21). This is followed by both Matthew and Luke, which are more or less directly dependent on Mark. It is in John's Gospel that we find Jesus carrying the cross all the way to the site of his crucifixion - John 19:17.
