After Rosa Parks was arrested the churches met to discuss how they could change the law. King was a young minister and it was decided that a boycott was the way to go instead of using violence.

Rosa Parks refused to move when the bus driver told her to so that a white person could sit there, so all African Americans, NAACP members, and SCLC members subsequently refused to ride the buses in Montgomery, instead choosing to walk and car pool. This hurt the city's economy greatly, as most bus riders were blacks, and the boycott went on for 381 days.
