He had the help of Grace (the nanny) who was like a mother to them so he wasn't totally on his own, she is still helping to look after them now, he was also around children a lot before he had his own and learned from the mistakes his father made.

Michael was a strict father. There were certain rules the children had to abide by. For example, they could not have more than one piece of junk food a day (unless it was a birthday or Christmas) and could not call their toys 'mine', as toys were considered to be things to share. He can be seen on a home video chastising Prince for interrupting when he is speaking to Paris, but has stated that he would 'never raise a finger to his children' as he himself suffered physical discipline at the hands of his father, Joe Jackson, that made him so scared he would 'feel sick' when he was in the same room. The children have been said by many to be very smart, polite, well-mannered children, who were sweet and kind.

He treated his 3 children the way he wanted to be treated by his father Joeseph Jackson. He has said it once in one of his interviews "That's why 'till this day, I don't lay a finger on my children."
