Napoleon was a Corsican who got a scholarship to military school in France. He then graduated at 16 and became an officer in the military. He rose up the ranks meteorically during the French Revolution. The Directory asked him to command troops to put down monarchist rebels in the streets of Paris, and after his success, they made him commander of the French army in Italy. He had great success despite a small and dysfunctional army. When he returned to France he was asked by abbé Sieyes and other Legislative members to disband the Directory by force, and did so. He was named first consul of the new Republic, and after more wars in 1801 thus giving him full power over France, he crowns himself emperor in 1804.
He was a part of a coup against the lawful government of France.
