Neil was never really interested in becoming an astronaut. When he was a young child he was very interested in planes and he wanted to become a pilot. The Wright Brothers were Neil's inspirations.

As a child Neil Armstrong lived near a Air force base , and loved to see the planes takeoff and land, in the evening his one plea was could we see one more plane.So it was his father and the planes that influenced him.

Neil Armstrong loved planes and flying since he was young. He got a pilot's license before a obtaining a driver's license. Flying was his first love, and space flight was the ultimate expression of this love he had for flight. It would not have made sense for him not to have gone to space.
