New Amsterdam was founded for the Dutch West India Company for the sole purpose of profit(thru trade)
The colony of New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch West India Company, hoping to find as much profit as the Dutch East India Company did in the spice trade. The only trade item developed by the colony was furs from the indians. The company blundered in developing the colony for settlers so that populaton growth was very slow, resulting in little production of agricultural products or manufactured goods that could be shipped back to Holland. It was almost a mercy to have the place stolen away by the British after several decades of mismangangement.
When the Dutch settled on lower Manhattan island it was originally just a fur trading settlement. A few years later it was named Nieu (or New) Amsterdam in honor of the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
The Dutch founded settlements on the shores of what is now the United States. In 1621, the Dutch founded the colony of New Netherland (present day Albany and New York City). I think they were searching for new lands, because they heard about the other European countries that had success in this. Also, they were searching for new shores so they could turn them into harbors for new trade routes.
The Dutch founded New Amsterdam which the English later came in a re-named New York.
the Dutchies had it and the English wanted it. The Dutchies traded new Amsterdam for the land thats now called Suriname.
