A lot of the people who had emigrated from Europe to what became the US had done so for very good reasons of not liking where they were and wanting to start a new life in the New World. The Irish Emigrants certainly had good reason to dislike the British, by which I primarily mean the English. The nature of patriotism is a belief in your country, and though a few of the settlers were loyal to the Crown & King George III, most saw the US, as it became, as a new, young , inspiring country. The desire to cut the ties to the Old World must have been very strong indeed. Now, about these taxes..............
1/3 of the colonist were for the war, 1/3 were against the war, 1/3 were neutral. That was John Adams' estimation. It is very likely that the Middle Third's sympathies shifted throughout the war depending on who seemed to be winning at the time.
The patriots were very unhappy with British rule. The were willing to risk their lives, their families, and their property to separate the United States from British rule.
the colonists hated king george
During the earliest times of the Colonial period, settlers pretty much ruled themselves. Colonists rose up to help the British regular army fight the 7 Years' War, which kicked the French out of Canada-- most were fairly satisfied. http://www.lavellecoleman.ie/

The two choices the colonists had were either to submit or rebel against British rule. As the relationship between the colonists and Great Britain began to strain, the British continued their policy of taxation without representation. This angered the colonials and ultimately led to the War of Independence. While many colonials had no choice but to surrender to British rule, it would be the rebels and patriots that rallied the masses against tyrannical British law in the colonies.
They wanted freedom from British.
They didn't like the rules so they decided instead not to follow them.
