There was never an official explanation of this, though his friendship with fairies in general was explained in "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens".
When Peter was a baby, he overheard his parents talking about how he would one day become a "man", and didn't like the sound of that. So he escaped to Kensington Gardens (a nearby park), where he was taken in by the birds and the fairies.
when peter was told by his actualy father that he needed to grow up, peter ran away to kensington gardens, where he met tink. hope this helped. :)
