How did Pinocchio become a real boy?

In the book, he worked hard, took care of an ailing Geppetto and finally put aside a little money for a suit, but gave it all up when he heard that the Blue Fairy was ill. So the next morning he woke up and he was changed, because his heart had changed (before, he was a mischievous boy who didn't like school or work and made very bad friends).

In the movie, he dies saving his father from the giant whale Monstro, and the Fairy changes him because he has proven his worth.
