President Johnson implemented a bombing campaign known as Operation Rolling Thunder to try to cripple North Vietnam's military and industrial capabilities. He also attempted to stop North Vietnam from sending supplies and troops to the guerrillas in South Vietnam through a policy called interdiction, which involved targeting supply routes and infiltration routes along the Ho Chi Minh trail. Additionally, he authorized the deployment of ground combat troops to South Vietnam to counter the guerrilla forces.
To try to stop North Vietnam from helping the Viet Cong guerillas, President Johnson tried a multi-prong approach. He combined heavy bombing of the north with the offer of economic assistance to North Vietnam.
He could not get Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act. It was his successor president Johnson who finally got it passed into law.
Eisenhower: sent military advisers to help prop up the non-communist government.Kennedy: sent in 16,000 advisers and helped plot a coup to obtain a more favorable government..Johnson: gradually escalated the situation into full-scale war.Nixon: extended the war into Cambodia and Laos but gradually reduced US troops in Vietnam from 500,000+ to 25,000 while helping train south Vietnamese troops to replace them.Ford: negotiated a truce which allowed most Americans to get out, but allowed North Vietnam to takeover the South,
What "main supply line" might that be? 1. Haiphong Harbor? 2. The Ho Chi Minh Trail? 3. Rail & Truck routes leading to and from Red China? All were bombed at one time or another. However restrictions were applied to any areas that Soviet or Red Chinese personnel might be; such as unloading or loading cargo ships at Haiphong Harbor or certain SAM sites where foreign technicians might be. Yes its strange that the US was trying to avoid "killing or wounding" foreigners that were HELPING the enemy during the war, but you must remember, the US did NOT want to provoke a war with the Soviets nor Red Chinese. That card had been played before, in 1950!
There are two dates for the American involved Vietnam War: 1955-1964 is the guerrilla war SOUTH Vietnam. 1965-1975 is the conventional war in both NORTH & SOUTH Vietnam. Note: North Vietnam was not bombed prior to 1965. NVA and USA regulars did not officially tangle prior to 1965.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was known particularly for taking over for JFK when he was assassinated. He was quite self conscious and felt that he was not going to be a well liked character in history. One of the reasons is because he also had a lot to do with the Vietnam war, which was not very popular in and of itself.

we didn't lose Vietnam. We simply left when President Nixon went into office. We trained the south Vietnam people to fend for themselves and slowly took troops out, then when the two Vietnam's called a peace treaty for the new year celebration Tet north Vietnam issued several attacks on South Vietnam. So the side we were helping lost but truthfully we did not lose.
Nixon's plan for Vietnamization was to slowly replace the American troops fighting in Vietnam with Vietnam troops. Slowly bringing the Americans out of the war and helping the Vietnamese people have control over the conflict.
He agonized over it, micro managed it and despised it. President Johnson wanted to end the war and that he "trying to win it just as fast as I can in every way that I know how" and later stated that he needed "all the help I can get." In the end he relised that he couldn't win the war and that is why he refused to run for a secont term.
