Richard died on 6 April 1199 from the after-effects of an arrow wound received during the siege of Chalus in France and was buried next to his father at Fontevraud Abbey near Chinon and Saumur, France.

Richard I was shot in the shoulder (some report the wound was to the neck), while taking the Château de Chalus-Chabrol, the castle at Limoges under seige. Pierre Basille is credited with having fired the crossbow, which seriously wounded Richard, and killing him, 4 days later.
