The "fall" of Rome made a definitive impact on the Roman people. After it was taken over by the Huns a lot of Roman and Greek technology and knowledge was lost, because the Huns were a war state and had no use for anything that didn't benefit military. This started the period of the Middle Ages which definitely affected the Roman people.
With economy, there's trading going on all around with the Silk Roads. With that comes epidemics, or disease. That in turn causes the population to decrease...
Also with the silk roads, China and India export silk and spices but don't want anything from Rome. So Rome has to pay with metals such as gold. This lowers their currency.
This all ties into taxation of the plebeians(peasants) to pay the army- the central of the Roman Empire. It's too much for them and that contributes to their fall.
Imperial expansion led to a great expansion in trade. The Romans developed trading networks which span throughout the Roman Empire and beyond (Arabia, Persia, India, Chine, Ethiopia, Germany and Poland).
The city of Rome was the hub of this trade. It imported goods on a massive scale.Grain was a major item of imports (half of it from Egypt, the rest from Tunisia, Sicily and Sardinia). It was needed to feed its large urban population. It also imported large quantities of olive oil (the largest supplier was Spain, followed by Turkey and Syria). It also imported expensive cloth, silk (from China) and linen and cotton (from Egypt) for the rich. Spices, herbs, sesame oil, sugar, limes, peaches, ebony, pearls and wild animals (tigers, rhinos, elephants, and snakes which were used for circus-type animal acts) were imported from India. Egypt, besides corn and textiles, exported papyrus, ivory, gemstones, ebony, ostrich feathers, leopard skins, lions, leopards and elephants. Incense, perfumes and spices were imported from Arabia. Timber, wool, wine, glass and horses were imported from the Middle East. Spain also exported silver, wine, timber, and horses. France exported glass, wine, and wool. Britain exported silver and wool. There was also a trade in marble, granite, porphyry and other stones for buildings.
Rome and Italy exported amphorae, manufactures, cameos and other jewellery, works of art, some marbles, wool and wine.
The creation of the empire integrated the conquered lands into a single set of trading networks where goods were exchanged around the empire. Rome had a policy of free trade and low taxed. Sge laso built infrastructure to favour trade: roads, bridges and ports, and dams and canals for irrigation. The equites, the rich entrepreneurial class of Rome, became heavily involved in trade and run most of the shipping companies which transported goods around the Mediterranean. They bought and sold goods around the empire and shipped them. Thus they created the infrastructure of trade. They also invested in productive activities, such as mining and the transport of the metals.
Wth a great portion of the territory in the Western Empire taken over by the invading Goths, Vandals and Huns, the remaining part was economically insignificant. The Eastern Empire managed to war them off and sustained itself for another millennium.
Over spending of the government was a big contribution. Also, heavy taxes that the Romans could not afford to pay off.

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.

The fall of the Roman Empire was not quick at all. It was the cumulative effect of many different causes, including attacks by barbarians, a declining economy, and the citizens no longer believing in Rome. -Caleb Mauer
