They avoided a battle and retreated leaving only scorched earth behind them. The Russians beat Napoleon by waiting for the cold Russian winter to come. When it did, the Russians attacked a weakened and starving army with their horsemen.

The Russians knew that any invading army, the same applied in 1941, would not withstand their two great generals, General January & General February. Borodino was a huge bloody conflict & though the Russians quit the field there was no pursuit and claims of a French victory ring hollow. 43 French generals died in 1 day ! Kutuzov plays a strateigic masterstroke by his withdrawl. Although again a drawn battle, Maloyaroslavets induces Napoleon to go back the way he had come, via Smolensk. Each river crossed, each day as winter approaches are nails in the coffin of the French, & by the time they reach the Berezina at the end of December 1812 the cossacks have harried them & picked off stragglers & 3 Russian armies converge to attack. Napoleons days of greatness are now nothing but history.

either frontal attack or guns and cannons... It was called the Scorched Earth strategy, or policy. The Russian Army actually lost the Battle of Boradino, but Napoleon's losses were very high. Alexander I ordered Moscow to be abandoned, and nothing was left to the enemy except scorched earth. The winter also killed many of Napoleon's soldiers, and rather than risk losing another battle the Russians used smaller attacks by Cossack cavalry to force Napoleon back.
