It was at the war's first pitched battle (Bull Run/Manassas), when a Confederate Brigadier called Barnard Bee was heard to shout "There is Jackson, standing like a stone wall!"

There are two interpretations of this. Some say he was criticizing Jackson for not coming across to help. Others say he was praising him, and went on to shout "Rally behind the Virginians!"

As Bee was mortally wounded later in the day, nobody was able to ask him which he meant. But Jackson became 'Stonewall' from that day on, until his own mortal wounding at Chancellorsville two years later.
