Herbert Hoover turned to business to assure that business kept manufacturing and paid their workers but industrialists cut production because the economy could not buy much. Congress passed acts to assure that agriculture stayed productive but those failed too. Hoover tried to pump money into the big business so that banks and corporations would not fail and ultimately help the poor. This theory was known as trickle-down economics which means if you pump money into the top in the long run the people at the bottom will benefit.

The major effect of the Great Depression on America was expanded government intervention into new areas of social and economic affairs and the creation of more social assistance agencies at the national level. The relationship between the national government and the people changed drastically. The government took on a greater role in the everyday social and economic lives of the people. The New Deal programs of FDR also created a liberal political alliance made up of labor unions, blacks and other ethnic and religious minorities, intellectuals, the poor, and some farmers. These groups became the backbone of the Democratic Party for decades following the Depression.
The Great Depression and the New Deal measure led to the domestic programs of JFK's New Frontier, and LBJ's Great Society and War on Poverty. The New Deal measures have also an influence on the current Obama administration, in its attempts to stimulate the economy.

When the Great Depression first started, Herbert Hoover did practically nothing to aid in its end. Therefore, when the next election came around, the people voted into office a democrat who promised an end to the Great Depression. This man was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was granted blank check power from Congress, which meant that he could pretty much pass whatever legislation that he wanted without approval from the government. He then went on to pass 100 laws in his first 100 days, an unprecedented feat. The size of the government increased, and the government became more controlling.
