∙ 6y agoAfter the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, Major General Henry W. Halleck decided that since he was unable to totally dismiss General Grant, Halleck would personally take over Grant's army. Halleck was the Union general in charge of the Western Theater for the US and was General Grant's supervising officer. Fully aware that Grant's army was made greatly vulnerable due to its lack of entrenchments, Halleck proceeded with all caution in his pursuit of Rebel forces concentrating in Corinth, Mississippi. This made his progress slow but safe. And, Halleck may well have been aware that ancient Roman legions on the march, ended each day by building a defensive encampment in order to protect itself from enemy raids. There progress was also slow but safe. With that said, if the Romans were making use of their roadway system, they may have been moving faster than Halleck who had to travel on rough country roads.

Under the leadership of Union General William S. Rosencrans, this second battle of Corinth in Mississippi was a Union victory. The battle was waged from October 3 to the 4th of October, 1862.
General Hallecks chief problem with Union operations and strategies in June of 1862 are perhaps one reason later on that US President Lincoln had to change his own ideas on conducting the war. The fact is that in early June of 1862, Halleck had no strategy at all.

The Battle of Shiloh was not expected by the Union's high command in 1862. The commander in the Western Theater, Major General Henry W. Halleck, nor other Union generals expected a Confederate ambush at Shiloh ( Pittsburg Landing). With that said, Sherman had issued marching orders for the target of Corinth. He believed that once his troops landed at Pittsburg Landing, it should be a 2 day march to reach Corinth, Mississippi. To accomplish that he mandated that his commanding officers should make the ten mile distance moving at 2 miles per hour.

Confederate President Jefferson Davis was disappointed when General Beauregard abandoned Corinth. He was replaced by Braxton Bragg. Here Davis misunderstood the situation. Beauregard was totally outnumbered. He wanted to avoid a siege on Corinth. With a clever move, he led Union General Henry Halleck to believe that Corinth was fortified and would receive reinforcements. Using logs painted black, and hats to make it seem the Confederates were still in Corinth, Beauregard avoided a disaster by sneaking out of Corinth and moved south to Tupelo.
