Doing laundry in the Victorian era was a lot more labor intensive than it is today. They washed clothing by hand with water carried from a pump, using a washboard. To dry the clothing, they wrung as much water was they could out by hand and then ran the clothing through a mangle before hanging it, either outdoors or indoors, to finish drying.
As many victorians did not have bathrooms, but only outside toilets andd no bath in the average household, they just used water left in the bath...most poor homes had a tin bath, that was filled from heating water up on a stove. Soap was available, and they used if they could afford it dry powder. They certainly did not have the vast variety of goods that we have today
