More than 350,000 African Americans served in segregated units during World War I, mostly as support troops. Several units saw action alongside French soldiers fighting against the Germans, and 171 African Americans were awarded the French Legion of Honor. In response to protests of discrimination and mistreatment from the black community, several hundred African American men received officers' training in Des Moines, Iowa. By October 1917, over six hundred African Americans were commissioned as captains and first and second lieutenants.

There were many different effects that World War One had on African Americans. Some of which were good, and some that were bad. African Americans had just been freed from slavery not to long ago. They were however segregated because of their color. Most African Americans had trouble voting and most people would blame them for crimes that they did not do.

African Americans were provided the opportunity to earn recognition due to World War 1. Many signed up to serve in the war where they were moved up in rank quickly for their efforts. For many African Americans this was the first time that their achievements were recognized equally with their white fellow soldiers.

As a result of the USA joining the war in 1916, industry production in America boomed. Manufacturers had to keep production up to the pace needed to support the war. In order to produce more material in a short amount of time, new technologies were developed to help manufacturers meet the needs of the government and people. Also more employment opportunities opened for women and African-Americans. In the absence of most of the able-bodied men in American, women became the main population of the factories, and African-Americans migrated to the cities to find jobs. The flood of African Americans from Southern rural areas, specially from thew South, to the Northern urban areas was called the "Great Migration."

In World War two the Blacks proved they could be great soldiers and airmen. They earned more medals than many of the white counterparts (and some didn't get any when they should have). They also did not lose any of their airplanes (Tuskegee Airmen). They were the best tank division and even General Patton admitted it. They go home and find out nothing changed in the US even when the blacks were working hard for the war effort. The South and many other people still treated them with disrespect and segregation.

During the Civil War the poor slaves were legally allowed to leave the plantations and other places but then they had nowhere to live and no way to earn money. Some were really not freed, nor were they paid. In the letter of the law they really were not freed, made equal or treated as being humans with rights and abilities. They were considered half human and some lower than dogsand cats. It only took another hundred years to even begin to give them a spark of real respect and equal treatment in the South and other places. Where I grew up it was ludicrous the Blacks were treated they way they were treated in the southern states. It still boggles my mind.

In the Viet Nam War they were treated better and the whites learned to make friends with them and they were not segreated from the white troops. But, do you think there were high up black officers? No. That took a long time to happen. Now we even have black men and women who are high up in the militaryand the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

it changed their lives because they were the ones who were in the war trying to get respect from wherever they lived at so they won't be treated like a slave like they were.
