I do not claim to be an expert on this subject, but here are some of the impressions I had concerning music during the war.

1. A dance called "Jitter-bug" became popular. From my view point is Judo set to music. It involves a lot of energy and tossing a girl around.

2. Since so many men were gone off to war the movies were filled with musicals. These featured many girls, usually singing.

3. Female vocalists were common, and popular. One of the most famous were the "Andrew Sisters." (3 of them.)

4. Song became very sentimental, filled with thoughts of love, memories, faithfullness for those far away.

Well those are my memories. Not much, I'm sure someone connected with music could be more helpful, perhaps a music teacher in a school.

Hope this is of some help, John

One example worthy of note was Hitler's hatred of the jazz movement and his active promotion of Wagner's works. A second might be the popularity of American Pop Music that was a part of every Tokyo Rose broadcast.

In WW1 it was prodominently either live shows, home music(families/friends singing/ playing instruments) or 79rpm records. Although trnsmissions of radio had started commercial transmissions were still a short while away.

In WW2 it again was records and live (home based) music. However, radio stations were popping up especially in Europe as these stations were also being used to communicate to the allied troops what was occuring and passing messages to the various freedom fightes and agents

In nearly every war, music plays a role, whether to inspire patriotism or to reassure the public. This was certainly true during World War II, as songwriters created new music to help the nation to cope with the fear and uncertainty, as well as to encourage the public to support the troops. In America, the major radio networks provided regular programming that featured the biggest stars, including Kate Smith, Bing Crosby, and the Andrews Sisters, performing patriotic songs or sending out romantic ballads to the men fighting overseas. In addition to patriotic music and love songs, there were also songs that ridiculed Hitler (for example Spike Jones & His City Slickers had a very popular 1942 hit, "Der Fuehrer's Face"). Among the most popular hit songs during the war years were "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "I'll be Home for Christmas."
