In Great Britain, sailors were given limes to eat - when aboard long-distance sailing vessels. Thus, they were called "Limeys". The vitamin C in limes prevented scurvy - as this is a disease which results from vitamin C deficiency.

Nowadays, just eating some citrus fruits and/or taking vitamin C supplements prevent scurvy from occurring.

Scurvy is very rare - in the United States, today. It does occur, however, in less developed parts of the world, especially in Africa.

As far as I know the best treatment for scurvy would be to eat high vitamin C foods. In the British Navy limes were given to sailors to prevent scurvy. This is why English are sometimes called "limeys".

Scurvy is a disease caused by a dificiency of vitimin C. So if you were to consume anything that holds enough of vitimin C that would prevent scurvy. Some of those things would be Oranges, manderines, possibly lemons or limes, or any citris fruit for that matter. Nevertheless I would probably do a little more research on what fruits or different kind of foods have a good amount of vitimin C.

Good luck:)
