How and why did castles change over time?

Why 1Castles in medeval times changed from motte and bailey castles to concentric castles. They changed them because the motte and bailey castles (which were made out of wood) had lots of weaknesses:

• Sets on fire easily
• Rots quickly
• Isn't very strong

Also, King William (William the conqueror) (the ruler in those times) built motte and bailey castles to stop any rebellians and would only take a few days to build.

Concentric castles were made out of stone. Stone doesn't set on fire, doesn't rot and is very strong.

They also didn't just change because of the weakness of the motte and bailey castles but because of the influence of change of culture, and warfare. This lead to them becoming more safe and easier to defend and attack.

HowWhen King William (william the conqueror) wanted to replace the Motte and Bailey castles he knocked them down and replaced them with concentric castles.

Because in the medieval ages the castles were made round to stop a method of destroying castles. the method was to dig a hole underneath the castle wall and burn it from below, although having round edges the wall wouldn't burn because of it's shape!

The castle went from the mott and bailey wooden castle or keep for one simple reason and that was fire. They could catch fire very fast and they were prone to the wood drying out due to weather. When gun powder was introduced to Europe that also had something to do with getting rid of wooden structures for stone. Yet, the stone keep kept the mott and bailey format and after William the Conqueror came into power the stone tower was added. Often when the new stone keep was built it was made as a new structure and many times people lived in the wood one and the stone one . There are several in Wales where this was done . Historians do not know very much about the life in the the castles because when people left they took all items in the move and all we see are the shells of what they lived in and now how.
