Native Americans used hunting, gathering, farming and on some occasions, raising domestic animals as food sources. Native Americans from the North and Northwest were primarily hunting and gathering societies, but also fished and in some cases were able to farm a bit if the climate permitted. On the other hand, Native Americans in the Southwest, had a more nomadic lifestyle and used hunting and gathering as their main food sources.

Most Native American life was very different in the Southwest from life on the Great Plains. The people on the Plains who were most like the southwest were the settled agricultural peoples such as the Mandan (Rų́ʔeta ") or the Pawnee (Chahiksichahiks). These peoples lived in permanent homes in villages and grew corn, squash and beans. They went hunting for buffalo seasonally. In this way they were similar to the different Pueblo peoples and the Navajo. The Pawnee, some Pueblo people and the Navajo also have matrilineal clans in common. Their religious and philosophical beliefs were not very similar, though.

Some Apache groups in the SW had a life very similar to the Plains people especially the Lipan and Kiowa Apache. The Comanche in Texas also had a life more like the Plains peoples. They were similar to the Lakota in the way they were a horse culture that dominated and forced out neighboring tribes.
