From the end of WWII (1945) until 1960, the US was NOT geared for guerrilla warfare. The US was prepared to fight the USSR, when they came "through the Fulda-Gap" in Europe. Every tank, every warship, every jet fighter plane, was geared for conventional war against the USSR (Soviet Union) in Europe. Including the US Infantryman's battle rifle, the M-14.

With 20/20 hindsight, and the collapse of the USSR in 1990, it seemed all a little bit of a waste, when the historian considers the fact; that the ONLY two major wars to occur after 1945; were in ASIA. The ONLY US personnel that were prepared to fight a guerrilla war, were our US Special Forces (Green Beret). And "they" were President Kennedy's first reinforcement group of men sent to Vietnam.

As history bears out, the US fought the war in Vietnam with cold war weapons intended to fight the Soviet Union. We did learn however, that the guerrilla could be beat, if we applied fire power with search and destroy. The Viet Cong (primarily a guerrilla force), was essentially defeated by the end of 1969, only the hard core NVA (North Viet Army) remained undefeated until we departed the country (when ordered to, the NVA held their ground).

Guerrilla warfare, also known as "Bushwacking", is used because its a cheap way to fight.

1. No uniforms required. (Using whatever they happen to get their hands on).

2. No budget required. (Utilizing captured or stolen property means they're not buying it).

3. No equipment required. (They use captured or stolen equipment).

4. No rules to follow. (Supposed to follow some rules, but they often don't, which is why they're often executed when captured).

Combatants utilize guerrilla/bushwacker tactics when they don't have a regular military force available for combat.

Which Vietnamese? The war was fought between two different countries: North Vietnam and South Vietnam, with allies from other nations.

The war went conventional after the Tonkin Gulf Incident in 1964, when in 1965 conventional US forces were deployed to South Vietnam. From that point onward, units of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) fought units of the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy (who fought elements of the North Vietnamese Navy), and US Air Force (who engaged elements of the North Vietnamese Air Force-NVAF).

Guerrilla warfare is a style of battle that allows the soldiers to remain hidden while in battle. British troops were taught to fight facing their enemy in an open field lined side by side. The change in warfare style allowed the colonists a better chance at surviving as well as surprise the British.
