Before the U.S. became involved with Hawaii, Hawaii was an island inhabited by Polynesian settlers. They were ruled by a king. Seeing Hawaii as a great place to have a naval base, we Americans decided to sail over there and take it over. It did not take long at all before the local Polynesians were ruled by America. Members of government were sent there to "hold" it as it was only a territory of the U.S. Soon a vote took place and Hawaii was then annexed into America.

Imperialism is the reason why Hawaii became a US territory (and eventually a US State). The expansionist policy of the US at that time considered the annexation of Hawaii, which was a sovereign, independent kingdom at that point, desirable. If not for imperialism, Hawaii might still be independent.
