The weather was a part of luck. It destroyed a lot of the spanish ships around the Scottish border that they were forced to go around because of the strong winds, and because they had cut their anchors in panic from the fire boats English sent at them.

The English were able to overcome the Spanish Armada for many reasons. One of these reasons was because their original commander, Santa Cruz, died soon before the attack and his inexperienced and clearly unqualified successor, Duke of Medina Sedonia took the position of commander. Another reason was the fact that a giant storm caught the Spanish off guard.
