The European Union is comprised of what was formally the European Coal and Steel Community (founded 1951). In 1993, the Maastricht Treaty created the European Union as we know it today.

The Treaty of Rome started the European Economic Community, which eventually be came known as the European Union. The Maastricht Treaty was the treaty that formally started the use of the name "European Union". It was signed in Maastricht, which is in the Netherlands.
