Before BC ferries, a privately owned ferry company called Black Ball ferries operated in and out of Horseshoe Bay. They had control of the routes to Gibsons and Nanaimo, starting from 1951. In fact, they built the first terminal at Horseshoe Bay. Before this, there really wasn't a lot of travel between the mainland and vancouver island, it was mainly just for industrial purposes.

There are ferry terminals to the North and South of Vancouver. The southern terminal is in Tsawwassen and goes to Schwartz Bay (just north of Victoria, BC). The northern terminal is in Horseshoe Bay and goes to Nanaimo. Both terminals have ferries to the Gulf islands as well. Before the Brooklyn Bridge was built and opened for use in 1883, people commuted across the East River by boats. Regular ferries operated between Kings County and the island of Manhattan.

George Vancouver did not discover vancouver BC it was simply named after him he actually discovered Vancouver Island it was actually Vancouver and Quadra Island , but the spanish shortened it to just simply Vancouver island.
