After the military veterans descended upon Washington to demand their promised bonuses in 1932, President Hoover's response was to send General MacArthur with his troops to control them. This resulted in one of the protesters being killed, veterans not getting their bonus and the loss of upcoming elections by Hoover.

In 1924 Congress voted to give WW1 veterans a bonus, but not to be paid until 1945. but in 1932 the US experienced a period of depression. as a result about 15,000 vets and their families descended on Washington D.C. They built and lived in shacks on the mall. Congress voted down a bill to grant their demands but they still refused to leave. After they were ordered many times to move out and many warnings, the army was called in to move them out by force. There were many injuries . One woman miscarried and one baby, who may have already been very sick ,died in the melee.

1932 was an election year and Franklin Roosevelt and the Democrats took every advantage of the situation . After they were driven off the mall, the vets moved to a new camp. and Mrs. Roosevelt visited the camp with great press coverage. Democrat writers delighted in saying that Hoover set the army against the veterans, but Roosevelt sent his wife to listen to their problems.
Hoover sent in General MacArthur and his troops to evacuate the Bonus Marchers. MacArthur's men shot one man to death. Hoover's reputation kept going downhill from there.
he used the military to disperse protesters.
He denied them their bonus which in return made it so Hoover would not be re-elected.
