Reggae formed when Ska and Rocksteady bands started to experiment with slower tempos and stripped down arrangements in the mid/late 60's. Ska was the result of imported pop records from the US and Europe. Often only a few copies of the 'original' made it to Jamaica, so enterprising bands and producers would record cover versions and release them.
The origin of the term 'reggae' is disputed, the most popular story is of Toot Hibbert who was joking with friends and said "lets do the reggay" and wrote the song "Do the Reggay" in 1968.
Reggae & Bob Marley
Reggae was developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. It is one of the most influential styles of music. The word reggae may come from the Jamaican word for "ragged man" or common person. In the 1950s Jamaican musicians began to experiment with drum and bass patterns which were inspired by the R&B broadcasts in the United States. Reggae usually has accents on the 3rd beat in each bar, there being four beats in a bar; many people think it's accentuated on the 2nd and 4th, because of the rhythm guitar. Reggae song lyrics include many subjects, such as faith, love, sexuality, relationships, poverty, injustice and more. Reggae started in the West Indies. In England in approximately 1968 or 1969 was around the time when English people became aware of it but it had been going in the West Indies a year or two earlier. A famous early number was 'The Israelites' by Desmond Dekker and the Aces. Peter Tosh said they were playing reggae in Africa hundreds of years ago with drums but Bob Marley and Lee Perry introduced it as ska and rock put together. Ska is an amazing musical genre, its roots are found in jazz, punk and reggae. It originated in Jamaica in the 70s and has evolved since then. A ska band usually contains about 8 people: a singer, drummer, a couple of Guitarists, a bass, and about 3 other horn players (Trombone, sax or trumpet). But there are variations. Most ska songs have the signature reggae groove (guitar plucked on the offbeat) and are often fast, high tempo songs. Some great legendary ska bands: Catch 22, Reel Big Fish, the Slackers, the Aquabats, the Good Skamaritans and even No Doubt started as a ska band. Most ska bands wear checkers.
