Rome fell due to a combination of several different reasons. First, a series of impotent rulers. The last great Roman emperor, by most peoples standards was Marcus Aurelius, who died in 80 A.D. After his death, emperors became steadily worse (and ironically, shorter lived). When Diocletian split the empire around 293 A.D., conflicts between the Eastern and Western emperors rose up. Second, the size. Rome's power was spread too thin over to large an area. Trajan ruled the empire at its largest, when the empire stretched from Britain in the north, to Egypt in the south, from Persia in the east, to Spain in the west. Troops couldn't maintain control over the population. Which leads to the third reason. Internal rebellions. The lower class began to fight back against the upper, many furious with the failing economy and unemployment rate due to the high slave labor force, both other major reason. It didn't help that the aristocracy also attempted to placate the peasants with costly entertainment, such as gladiatorial games. With the armies focused on the internal struggles, the barbarians were capable of driving deep into the Western empire. Many of these barbarians were actually hired at one time or another to serve in the Roman military, which gave them an extensive knowledge of Roman tactics. Any army that resisted, including an army lead by Aetius and Theodoric the Goth against the Huns, were crushed. Both internal strife and barbarian wars lead to huge increases in military spending, which added to the national debt. All of this combined with the rise in Roman decadence, natural disasters, and the spread of Christianity, all lead to the fall of Rome.
