How people research the moon and other planets?

We have sent astronauts to the Moon to collect samples from the surface and examine here on Earth. Some of the samples are on display at various museums.

Planets are as yet too far away to send astronauts. Instead, we have observed the light scattered by their atmospheres, which through spectral analysis allows us to find out what chemicals are present in their atmospheres. We do the same type of analysis with unknown materials here on Earth.

Recently, we have been able to send probes on paths that fly by various planets that have gathered photographic and radiation data and sent the information back to us by radio. We have also managed to land a robot (Spirit) on the surface of Mars and have performed remote analysis of the surface material in that way. This is the first time we have been able to examine the surface of another planet in this way.

That would have to be Sir Isaac newton. After writing his formula for gravitational

force between two masses, he showed ... using geometry and calculus ... that the

orbital motions his theory of gravitation predicts are exactly what we see in the sky,

including the motion of the moon around the earth.
