They were not allowed to even talk among themselves about any topics the master didn't want them to (which gave rise to slaves using codes, slang and messages in songs, stories, and music to communicate). And while some slaves may have had a skill--like carpentry, blacksmith, cooking, or sewing--they were not allowed to profit from these trades (the owner would)
